Relatively New Ink Pens that Won’t Write Anymore?
I am an artist and, as this is a bit of a slow season, I’m going through all of my materials to see what needs to be replaced, what needs to be reorganized and what needs to be repaired. Well, yesterday I decided to work with my Ink Pen and marker collection. I now sit here with a TON of ink pens that show LOTS of ink in their barrels, but won’t write – or will write for a couple of inches, then stop – or will write for a couple of inches…every 3 hours! AAUUGGGHH. Who can tell me what to do with these funky pens. They are from all brands – Bic, Pentel, Sakura Gelly Roll, Uniball, etc. I’ve heard 2 rather strange “cures” so I need the common sense of all you bright people! Thanks
Well here are a few of my “cures.”
Depending on what kind of pen.
The heat method only works with Ball Point, and the sticky typical Pen Ink. You probably aren’t talking about that though.
Markers. Felt Tip or the plastic tips. Again depends on the ink. Most are water based, so uncap them, and let them sit in water. (Only up to the tip, not sunk into a deep vat. You want to let the dried up ink IN the tips to fully dissolve again.) This sadly has a might or might not work factor. IF you can fully get rid of the dried blockage it works. Doesn’t always.
If perminant, well… sorry. Nothing works. Tried it all.
best fix for that is preventative. If you know your not going to use those for some time, put them into a tightly sealed container, and it wouldn’t hurt to put a damp sponge or something IN the container with them. but once those dry, like sharpies, forget it. Gonners.
Oh, the shaking method mentioned above? The reason that sometimes works is there is a solvent in the ink. IF you can get enough of that in contact with what ever dried up in the tip, it can sometimes clear it out.
But… again, if it’s Permanent Ink, dry is dry. Not everything is resoluable.
