Titanium Mechanical
Why do people think that titanium is the strongest metal?

I constantly hear or see advertisements for products that imply that titanium is stronger than steel. Is this just misleading marketing? Any good mechanical engineer can tell you that pound for pound steel is the strongest metal. Usually steel is alloyed with nickel to make the best stuff (superalloys). Any experts out there that can confirm or deny my belief? Please state sources for data.

Good question. I think if you are looking at strength compasion based on its alloys then its a close call.

But when they say Titanium is stronger than steel…..what really is being said is about its rich qualities and weight/strength ratio. Its stronger than steel when weight/strength ratio is considered. Titanium lighter than steel and still as strong.

For example…see below characteristics that was available in Europa Star Magazine.

* Titanium is 30% stronger than steel.
* Titanium weighs in at 47.90 on the atomic scale,
nearly 50% lighter than steel.
* Titanium resists corrosion: When exposed to the
atmosphere, titanium forms a tight, tenacious
oxide film that resists a variety of materials
that corrode other metals.
* Titanium is especially resistant to salt water
corrosion. ”
