Scholar Pencil Set
Which brand of Colored Pencils is the best?
I’ve used crayola pencils my whole life, and my opinion was that they were the best. (roseart was their competition, and roseart is indisputedly the worst.)
This year, I’ve used Prismacolor Scholar pencils in my art class, and they have blown me away. My question is, is there another brand that’s even better than the prismacolor ones? I’m going to get a set for my own use at home, and I want the best kind.
There are a number of brands that are all about the same quality when it comes to color choices, ease of working and lightfastness. Prismacolor is a classic brand that many artists use. Derwent makes a great line of pencil called Coloursoft (English brand–hence the spelling difference.) Faber-Castell’s Polychromos brand is also good. All are better than Crayola and will improve your drawings. The difference is in the way they layer and blend. They all have softer leads and purer colors, so they allow you to be more consistent in your results. That said, they are also quit a lot more expensive than the so-called ‘studio’ brands (of which Crayola is one) so the choice to upgrade will cost you some money. But then again, when it comes to art materials, you always pay more for quality.
