Keep the air clean – Are your candles do more harm than good?
Before the advent of electricity, candles were used primarily for lighting. The light is a symbol of the good and the beautiful, especially in times of emotional and spiritual darkness, and how humans relate to light is emotional, almost sensual.
Nowadays, candles are used primarily for their aesthetic value and smell, to establish a soft and warm or romantic, and for emergency lighting during power failures. Aromatic candles are often used as a vehicle for aromatherapy.
No matter how you slice it, candles are big business. Here are some interesting and "illuminating" statistics:
* Candles are used in 7 of every 10 U.S. households
* A majority of consumers burn candles 1-3 times a week with half of these consumers burning 1-2 candles at a time
* In 2006, the U.S. market for candles was estimated at $ 2,300,000,000
* 96% of all candles purchased are bought women
The prevalence of the candles in our homes is evident. The real question is how much they know about the type of candles you are buying and its potential impact on indoor air quality in your home?
Lead Wicks, can lead to problems
According to a study made eight years ago by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, 40% of candles on the market is still contained within their threads wicks. This is an alarming statistic in view of the fact that the U.S. manufacturing industry sailing voluntarily agreed to cease production of candles containing lead in 1974, once it was shown that Lead wick candles resulted in a higher concentration of lead in indoor air.
A candle with a lead core wick has shown that release of five times the amount of lead deemed hazardous to children and exceeds EPA standards for outdoor air pollution.
Lead, together with other metals such as zinc, is used to harden the wicks of the candles to remain straight when the surrounding wax begins to melt. The metal prevents lock of the downfall and extinction same as soon as the wax no longer supports it. Although Zinc is considered much less toxic than lead, little is known about the long-term effects of respiration in the form of zinc dust or fumes produced by burning it.
Soot is everywhere
Another problem inherent in the burning candles with lead wicks (especially those made with paraffin wax, a petroleum derivative) is a phenomena known as deposition Black soot. Often it is now believed that the burning of candles is one of the sources of black soot in the home. The amount of soot produced can vary greatly from candle to sail. A kind of candle can produce as much as 100 times more soot than another type. The type of soot may also vary. Although composed primarily of elemental carbon, soot Candle may include phthalates, lead and other toxic ingredients such as benzene and tuolene.
When soot in the air can be inhaled. The particles can potentially penetrate the deepest parts of the lungs and lower respiratory tract causing respiratory problems and aggravating existing asthma, lung or heart disease. If unchecked, the soot from burning regular paraffin candles can also cause significant damage inside your home equipment, electrical equipment and ducts.
Synthetically scented candles are believed to be an important source of soot due to products chemicals used in the "fragrance" oils tend to soften the wax, increasing the need to add metals to the fuses to harden. It is also likely that the main source of phthalates in the soot.
The Good news …
The good news is that there are ways to enjoy the candles not routinely exposed to harmful toxins. Here's how you can avoid the problem:
1. Make sure all candles not buying new lead in the wicks. Search for "lead" or "clean-burning coreless" tags on them. If you are unsure, a simple test can be performed by rubbing the tip of the wick on a piece of paper. If you leave a gray mark like a pencil, the lead-wick
2. Buy candles made with beeswax 100% or 100% vegetable wax. Because these candles are more expensive, many manufacturers tend to mix with paraffin. Avoid mixed wax candles. Search labels indicating that they are 100% pure
3. To reduce the soot does not matter what type of burning candles, keep wicks trimmed and do not burn candles about a draft
4. For aromatherapy candles, scented candles buy only pure essential oils. Soy candles are the best for this purpose such as clean, low-intensity and long life with superior scent throw (scatter). soy candles in containers also can melt if placed on a hotplate electric. It eliminates the soot generation coming from the direct combustion burning wicks and allows sufficient release the aromas.
