How can I melt pure silver?
I want to melt some pure silver wire that I have. I know that you can put a torch up to it, and it will begin to melt and ball up, but I would like to melt the wire together in some sort of bowl. So, I would first like to know what type of bowl I can melt the silver in (would copper work?) I know that the bowl has to have a higher melting point than the silver. Second, I would like to know if there are any fume precautions that I should know about. Third, I would like to know how to do this on a VERY low budget. I can’f afford to buy expensive and fancy melting contraptions. Would a torch work ?
I would consider buying a crucible, which should only cost say $20 – from a jewellery supply house. This is what you’ll melt your silver in.
Prior to using it you should melt borax into it which you can buy locally, but be sure that the borax is pure. This assists in the melting and creates a sliding casing for the molten metal.
You can make a shape or a cast by carving some fire brick, cuttle fish or even a piece of shaped hardwood……….
Once the silver is molten you can pour it into the mould and then clean it in 10% sulphuric acid + Water once it has cooled.
Sprinkle some extra borax over the molten metal just before pouring it. This removes any surface oxide and assists in the pour.
If you know someone with an Oxy – Acetylene rig maybe a mechanic or plumber, this will give you a faster and hotter heat, which means the silver will melt quicker and thus you create less oxide.
