The History Of The Pen And Writing
Pens have been around for thousands of years. 4,000 B.C., ancient tribes of people used crude Pens Made from hollow straws, grass, reeds as pens. Around 500 B.C., people began to make Pens From the wing feathers from geese and swan, known commonly as quill pens. These are the types of pens often represented in historical portrayals, movies and stories.
The feather pen evolved and in the 1800′s became the fountain pen. The first fountain pen was invented by L.E. Waterman in 1883. Like most product inventions, they spark from a bad experience with an older product that is not working the way it should. In this particular example, the pen Waterman used leaked and as a result he was unable to finish a sale. The bad experience triggered the idea of a pen with a built in mechanism for ink flow.
Borrowing from principles of capillary attraction, he designed a system that used air intake and air bubbles to pressure and de-pressure on the ink to be disposed at the tip of the pen. In 1884 he received a patent and in 1885 brought the product to market, making the pens at his own kitchen table. His business experienced explosive growth.
The first ball point pen was developed in 1888 and was used to write on leather fabrics. Ball Point Pens didn’t become a common until World Word 2 when they became a pilot favorite since they didn’t leak at high altitudes and high pressure like regular pens. The first ball point pen to replace the then common fountain pen was introduced by Milton Reynolds in 1945. It used a tiny ball bearing which rolled heavy gelatin ink onto the paper.
Traditionally one thinks of the Greeks and Romans who used cakes of lead to write on papyrus paper or scrolls. But before the Greeks and Romans, primitive tribes and people of Northern Europe fine-tuned precision “writing” with use of hammers, chisels and rocks. The earliest writings in Northern Europe dates back to 4500 BC. In all ages it has been customary to engrave on stone or metal, or other durable material. Actually, the history of human communication dates back to the very beginning of humanity and symbols were developed about 30,000 years ago. These symbols evolved into writing somewhere in the 4th millennium before Christ.
Evidence of Writings in China, in the so called Jiahu Script have been found dating back to the 6th millennium B.C.
