question if KC aircraft needs fuel- what the does the pilot do?
okay we know that the military fly KC 10 tankers to help other planes
stay in the air by midair refueling but what if the tanker need refueling itself
does it return to base or can it too be refilled by another tanker?

Good question:
“The KC-10 can be air-refueled by a KC-135 or another KC-10A to increase its delivery range.”
“In addition to the three main DC-10 wing fuel tanks, the KC-10 has three large fuel tanks under the cargo floor, one under the forward lower cargo compartment, one in the center wing area and one under the rear compartment. Combined, the capacity of the six tanks carry more than 356,000 pounds (160,200 kilograms) of fuel – almost twice as much as the KC-135 Stratotanker.”

I was First Sergeant of a Strategic Air Command KC-135 tanker wing on Okinawa for 5 years (1978 – 1983). Our planes went out to pre-selected areas in the sky and flew an oval pattern waiting for the jets to come up and refuel. Then when the mission was complete the tanker returned to base with enough of its own fuel to fly home.
I would “guess” only in an emergency would the tanker shift some of its own flying fuel to a jet plane. Otherwise, all these missions are so planned out to the exact minute and nautical mile that it is impossible for the tanker to use up its own fuel. One of the jobs of the Wing Commander and his Staff is to ensure that there never is a problem with a tanker needing more fuel.
However, if a tanker is going to escort fighters or bombers from the US to foreign lands, the tankers stationed in England, Germany, Italy, Okinawa will come up and meet the flying unit and bring them “gas” as they fly to their targets.
Don’t worry. We have it all covered. But, good question though. You can see that many concepts are taken into account when planning to build an aircraft!
