History of Writing and Pens
The first pens
The first people to use the pen were, in all probability, the ancient Egyptians. They used reed pens to write on papyrus and thus the hieroglyphic form of writing was developed. At around the same time the Egyptians were using the reed pens, the quill pen was being used for writing the Dead Sea Scrolls and these were used till the 19th century.
Pens today
The reed pens as well as the quill pens are no longer used for writing. They went out along with the nib pen that had been a contemporary of the reed and the quill and which had been used in parts of Asia (China and India). Today there is a wide variety of pens and other writing instruments available in the world and you can choose among:
• Fountain Pens
• Ballpoint Pens
• Roller Ball pens
• Felt Tip pens
Choose the one that suits your personality and express yourself.
Pens de Luxe Group of fine pen shops is the largest pen specialty retailer in Australia with three outlets in NSW and two in QLD. The Pen Shoppe was originally founded in Brisbane in 1980 by Barbara and Bruce Nichol. There are now two shops that serve the Brisbane City area.
Owner and business woman Barbara Nichol has made a study of the history of writing. One of the country’s well known calligraphers, she has knowledge of all forms of writing and is also an expert witness for the legal profession in matters of questioned documents. This comprehensive understanding of writing and especially Copperplate (the fastest writing system that has been developed) has led Barbara to strive to offer pens and writing equipment for serious writers, artists, calligraphers and professionals.
