What is the point of a short story?
I don’t ask this to anger or annoy anyone. I truly love reading and writing and I’m trying to appreciate short stories.
It’s just that, when I read a novel, there’s a clear point. The character wants something and we have the various conflicts, etc. I love novels. When I read a good novel, it’s hard to put down.
But when I read a short story, all I seem to be reading is a description of life. And then it ends. And I keep saying to myself: Okay. What was the point of that?
I don’t see the normal pyramid structure of a novel – rising conflict, climax, resolution, etc.
For those of you who read Edward P. Jone’s Lost in the City collection of stories…take “The First Day.” It’s simply a description of the main character’s first day of school and his mother’s struggles to understand the process. Was the point of that story simply to SHOW (rather than tell, of course) the struggles of being illiterate?
I think you are looking at it from a wrong point of view.
See….Novels tell you a story, a detail of a bunch of incidents where you clearly have an intro, and conclusion.
A short story is a small incident where enough freedom is given to the reader to imagine a lot of stuff.
I do not think you can or should compare short stories and novels because they have two different purpose. For example, think about comparing a poem and a story. That impossible isnt it? Same with short stories and novels.
