Milestones in the History of Writing Pens
There are a variety of pens today. There are Roller Pens, Fountain Pens, reed pens, feathers, pencil tip, dip pens, Gel Pens, antler Ballpoint Pens, etc. Among the most prominent pens manufacturers are Parker Pens, Mont Blanc pens, Waterman pens, Bic pens, pointer Cross and many others. This remarkable writing instrument, with the help of which you can leave a trail of ink on a paper surface, is an indispensable part of our lives. In fact, it is an indispensable part of human culture.
The history of writing pens begins from of ancient times, about the year 3000 a. C. They were cut from stalks of cane. The English word "pen" (a Writing Pen) came of America "penna" meaning "feather of a bird." Occurred due to the popularity of goose feathers, which became the root. Since the sixth century C. feathers of birds have been widely used by many civilizations. The best examples of large feathers of swans, turkeys and geese. Archaeological finds in the ruins of Pompeii are variants of bronze pens, but have not received wide distribution only in the late eighteenth century. After a century with feathers a capillary system or, simply, fountain pens, were invented by LE Waterman, a New York seller of writing goods. Laszlo Biro, taking into account the latest methods of manufacturing of ball bearings for machines and weapons, said the ball mechanism capillaries and presented the pen with the world in 1944. The stationery company Pentel Tokyo became the first to present the felt-Tip Pen to the world in 1960.
The history of pens timer about 6000 years is long. Here are the major milestones in her:
About 3000-4000 years BC The ancient man scratched a damp clay plate with a brass pole or bone.
About 3000 BC the Egyptians began to use the images in their compositions. Thin reed brushes or feathers were used to make entries in the rolls papyrus.
1300 BC C. the Romans used metal pens for writing on thin sheets of wax put on wooden bars. Writings were erased by the other end of the pen.
Middle Ages. Anglo-Saxons began to use wax-filled bars, apart from parchment. They wrote with pens of metal or bone, with one end sharpened and the other was used to delete.
600-1800 AD Europeans discovered that the use of sharp feathers changed the style of writing (writing). First is used only capital letters but later began to use lower case to increase the speed of writing. Pen pen (goose feather) that for the moment it first appeared in Seville, Spain, was used as a writing instrument from 600 to 1800 AD
1790ies. Regardless of slate pencil was invented in France and Australia.
1800-1850ies. The pen metal was patented in 1803 but the patent was not used for marketing purposes. steel pens were widely adopted in 1830ies. In 19th century metal pens completely replaced goose feathers. In 1850 the use of feathers fell sharply, as the quality of steel pens is more: his suggestions were made of heavy alloys with the addition iridium, rhodium and osmium.
Lewis Edson Waterman, an insurance agent, invented the pen for the first time in 1844.
1888-1916
The invention of the ballpoint pen is officially dates from the late 19th century -. In 1888 John aloud patented in 1916 – Van Vechten Reisberg. Unlike other patents these were used in commercial purposes.
The invention of the modern ballpoint pen is attributed to Laszlo Biro and George Biro. In the summer of 1943, the industry first copies were manufactured. Patent rights were purchased by the British Parliament. Pens were used by militarians during the Second World War as were most convenient and reliable than quill pens.
In 1940ies pens appeared in the U.S. market. Pens were sold first wrote under water. Pens were a tremendous success. In one of the departments large stores in New York more than 10,000 pens were sold at a luncheon October 29, 1945.
In 1953 the first inexpensive Ball Pens appeared, when the Frenchman Baron Bich of BIC Co, dedicated to the manufacture of pens, managed to improve the technological process and significantly reduced manufacturing costs. Bic pens were very cheap and very soon became very popular.
In 1960, the felt-tip was invented in Japan. Soon markers appeared in the American market and took it.
Rollerball Pens appeared in the early 1980s. They had a ball moving and could use Liquid Ink enables Smooth Writing line in the paper. Technological progress of the late 1980s – early 1990s the Rollers improved significantly in all parameters.
In pens 1990s with a rubber surface that reduces pressure on the pen came into use and has been widely adopted.
In 1997 RingPens mass production began. These pens were developed to write without having to click on it three fingers when typing.
Technological progress does not stop. And who knows what kind of pens we to write in a decade, a century, a millennium …
