Making Starch, Gum/adhesive and Ethanol From Cassava

Cassava can be said to be the most cultivated food crop in Nigeria and this can be attributed to its wide adaptation to various soil conditions. It is mainly grown in the southern and middle belt area of the country. It is a known fact that Nigeria is one of the world’s leading producers of cassava tuber. The world’s attention is increasingly turning towards cassava, because of its greater usefulness to mankind. In Nigeria , adequate processing is not always employed thereby rendering ineffective some of the benefits that are derivable from this important root crop. There is a great potential in cassava production and processing through which an investor can extract riches.

All parts of cassava are extremely useful: the leaves, the stem, the roots and the peels.

Apart from turning cassava into garri, fufu, lafun, or chips and pellets for export. Three other useful products that are derivable from cassava, they are:

1.                 Starch

2.                 Gum/Adhesive

3.                 Alcohol

Cassava roots are a good source of starch, which is utilized in food, pharmaceutical and textile industries. Majority of operators in this industry still import cassava starch for their operation. Starch is a basic need of all people and virtually all industries. There is always a ready market for starch in the textile industry.

The feeling that the cost of procuring machinery for starch might be exhorbitant and that an average investor might not be able to meet it, should not deter a determined investor. We now have some companies that do “toll production” – that is, helping you process your cassava starch: dying, pulverizing, packaging and all, for a fee.

All that an investor needs to do is collect or prepare wet starch and take it for processing in one of these companies and pronto, you have your starch well dry powdered form, ready for the market.

One other important product from cassava starch is gum and adhesive. These products are important components in the packaging, printing and binding industries. The gum and adhesive being produced from cassava starch compete favourably with the imported adhesives.

Another important product from cassava is the alcohol (Ethanol). Alcohol is naturally produced from molasses, but this is in short supply in Nigeria hence the need for an alternative raw material.

Cassava peel is generated from the processing of cassava roots. It is an environmental pollutant but it is used in the production of alcohol and carbondixide.

Alcohol is used as an industrial chemical in disinfectants. It is also used in making alcohol beverages.

The above processes are ventures that interested entrepreneurs can venture into, because establishing them will not drill a hole in your pocket.

The initial capital to start and succeed in a project of your choice does not have to be large and difficult to raise, once there is enough zeal and determination.

The Nigerian investment environment is very receptive to small scale investors. No bureaucracy, no bottlenecks. All that it takes to succeed is yourself, fully armed with the requisite knowledge about what project you intend to embark upon.
