How to paint a room

Ladies and gentlemen, this is perhaps one of the most debated in the history of the world. Not because it is particularly difficult or demanding, but because everyone has done at least once. Everyone has their own opinion of how things should be done, and lately, I had the privilege of painting several rooms, which has been a rewarding experience, if not sometimes frustrating endeavor. Since I have done this, and spent much time in the paint shop talk with some of the advantages, I feel at least moderately qualified to give instructions. Ah, I've also done a lot of mistakes, and took a hand a few tricks on the road.

So, without further ado, on to the instructions. The first thing you will need to do: supply store. A lot of things you'll find more in the paint section of your store home improvement. Fancy gadgets abound there, and while it may be great to provide a specialized tool for edging in the inside corner of a wall, chances are, you do not. You will need basic supplies to get started:

1-2 rags: The role with one hand and the plastic on the other very easy to handle

1 roll with 2-3 good quality roller includes: Buena Smooth Roll with a rolling action cost about $ 8. Do not be stingy here.

A paint tray with plastic inserts: insert paint tray costs about $ 0.70 each, and will save a little cleaning. Once you've finished with them, can easily be removed. Trash em 'and put a brand new insert.

Quality brushes 2-3 Wide 1-3 "good brushes are expensive, but you can get a package of about $ 18 that contains 3-4 brushes at a discount. Purdy and Wooster are both excellent brands. These will be used for trim and detail work.

1-2 rolls of masking tape: A some surprisingly bad news on this front. The blue tape you see always touted as the painter's tape is too sticky, and can rip the paint on the wall. Also allowed to bleed through the paint, and a freshly painted wall Mar otherwise. We learned the hard way, while the painting of the court. There is a tape much better available, called "Green Frog". This tape comes off without taking the paint with it, or allow almost as much bleed through. It's $ 10 per 300 feet. It will be worth the $ 3 premium to pay, and will keep you from a world of annoyance.

1 small can of vinyl spackle, and a cheap knife, spackling Plastic: It is necessary to fill these holes in the wall different, with minor dents. Anything more, and you may be in lower repair plaster.

1 package of sandpaper grit 120: You will use it to rough surfaces, and sanding any piles remaining after revocation.

These are the supplies you need to apply the paint. In addition, we have to talk about the dirtiest part of the painting: The end of the previous color. This will be done by the application of a primer sealer. If you skip this step, you're asking for trouble. The main problem lies in the fact that age affects the color tone the new color. That's all well and good, if you like a bit of "lime green" in its "white wire" from the wall. Otherwise, follow these steps, I'm giving the letter.

First, remove all your outlet covers and LightSWITCH. Then, through, and fill the holes that are on your wall with spackle. Leave trash it dry for 2-3 hours. And sand back down, along with any rough spots or raised on your wall. Then cover the wall with primer. While the most popular brand is KILZ, you'll find the best coverage comes from a brand called Bullzeye 1-2-3. If I remember correctly, is manufactured by a company called Ziff. " You may need 1-2 coats of primer to fully neutralize the previous color. If you are painting the trim of a different color, go ahead and prime, at the same While doing the walls. You will have to wait a couple of hours between each coat of primer.

Now it is time to apply the paint. Most likely is that you have your paint selection. If so, no advice I can give, because they stick to the subject. If you have not already chosen, I urge you to download and buy your paint store local Benjamin Moore. While the paint from Lowe's and Home Depot Consumer Reports regularly wins the election "the best painting, these paintings are not judged as a professional matter. If you read the forums much as I did before making my purchase, you will find that Ben Moore are always at the head. Its coverage is unsurpassed, as is its ability to self-level and provide a uniform layer. I used it for my whole house. You will pay twice what you pay for a gallon of Lowe's painting, but you receive almost double the coverage, and much more colorfast paint once it heals. That's my two cents.

Since I have now retired from my gallery, I will return to painting. Open your paint with a flathead screwdriver, and then mix well stir until each produces a consistent color. Pour into the tray containing the prospectus. Now, take a 1.5-2 "brush and paint along the molding, and along the baseboard, in the same color as that wall is going to do, which is called" cutting. " Once done, it is time to begin rolling the wall.

Place the roll on roll, and move back and forth in the paint, until the entire top is saturated with paint. The tray usually have bumps on the part closest to you. Roll on these to ensure that the roller is not oversaturated. So painting a giant "V" on the wall. Use consecutive moves the roller to fill in between the V coverage. Do this for the rest of the room. Let dry for 2-3 hours, until dry to the touch throughout the entire room. If you see any drips or runs that have dried, take this time to quickly and with fine sandpaper until flat. Examine the thin layer of any coverage or any inconsistency in color. Repainted when necessary. I like to do two coats of paint, only to make sure everything looks even. Wait at least 4-5 hours, and once again make sure it is dry to the touch everywhere in the room. The waiting time is longer due to the fact that you apply the tape to the surface next.

Now that your walls are completely dry, apply tape download next to your molding and baseboards. Beware any tiny gaps or wrinkles in the tape. For management, I suggest breaking the tape in 4 feet or less. A little more than this, and it is difficult keep the length of the tape flush with the molding. Take your card, and review all the points that you may have accidentally painted the wall color. Let dry. Then Paint the court. You should probably be using a semi-gloss for it. I would also recommend two layers for molding as well. As soon as you finish painting the second coat, received the tape from the wall. If not, you have a much greater chance of paint bleeding cut on the wall.

Do you think it over? Incorrect. When you pull of the tape, there will inevitably be cut small spots of color that invade the cover of the main wall. This is not a problem. Just take a small, inexpensive, 4.3 "inch artist brush any Wal-Mart, and use it to paint on minor errors. Force slightly behind the trim if you want to sharpen the line between the wall and moldings. It is a little tedious, but this method will give more professional results possible.

In addition to the light soil on the wall, which inevitably will some paint on your carpet, wood or linoleum floor. This can be solved in minutes. Just get some nail polish remover with acetone, and implement a generous amount to the place (unless wooden floor, then just put some in a cloth and apply directly to the affected area). Rub vigorously, and painting will follow suit. It will not take the color of your carpet. I know, because I had some cleaning to do myself. Clean your brush dipped in warm water and soap for a while, then rinse under the tap. If you take care of the brush properly, will last for many years.

Now that I have begun I have to go. There are a few more rooms that need my attention, and do not want to miss out on the fun. Good luck.
